Northern Michigan, that is...we visited our upper peninsula this summer. On the way up to the UP we always camp a night at Hartwick Pines ...an area preserving a virgin stand of timber that was never logged. Awesomely TALL trees. Logging camp/museum that lies buried in that forest...a 'big wheel' used to move logs with a team of oxen. The Mighty Mackinac Bridge now linking the two halves of our state. Driving across always is a 'white-knuckle' experience! Lighthouse at Whitefish Point - also the site of the most excellent Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. The eastern tip of Lake Superior very near where the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost in a storm. Tahquamenon Falls...looks like root beer because of the tannins released into the water from all the trees lining the river's banks. The land of Hiawatha. Typical small town adventures - this is the metropolis of Trout Lake. More to come............... Alpha 350 | Painter, PSP |

Wonderful tour! I look forward to more. That bridge certainly looks calm and unassuming in that photo. I've heard it can be quite an experience in bad weather. Do they ever close it down? |

Do they ever close it down? Thanks. Crossing that bridge is quite a "trip"...this is the first year that Melissa has actually driven across. The experience is enhanced by seemingly too-low siderails and a splendid view of the water 200' below thru the open grating of the center two lanes! The bridge can 'flex' up to 35 feet sideways in strong crosswinds and is engineered to withstand 600mph winds - so far that has only actually been tested up to ~125mph. A Yugo was blown off the bridge with fatal consequences back in the 80s. High profile vehicles are banned during certain wind conditions and the bridge is closed to all traffic during extreme conditions. I couldn't find any stats on that except that the bridge management makes the decision. I would DEFINITELY abide by it. |

Thanks for sharing. Quote: The bridge can 'flex' up to 35 feet sideways in strong crosswinds That doesn't sound good. |
