How much does a typical wedding ring weigh?

I recently purchased my ring (14kt yellow gold) and my soon to be wife's (14kt yellow gold with 7 diamond chips) to match her engagement ring and want to see if I overpaid?

I work at NYMEX and Gold is going for about $552 per ounce. Figuring that rings were each slightly under an ounce each, then the price was good.... this does not take into account the price of the stones and the cost for craftsmenship of design though.

Any insight would be helpful as well as how much they typically cost nowadays.

My mother's set was about $600 but that was 6 years ago and gold was in the $400 per ounce range back then.

Thanks.

To answer your question, sort of, I don't really remember, but of course your rings aren't solid gold, either--they're 14 parts of gold to 10 parts of alloy. You're also paying for the workmanship involved in alloying the solid gold (soft) and casting it into rings that you can wear on a daily basis. After they're cast, they're all rough and discolored, so they have to be cleaned and polished, too. In your fiance's case, you would add in the price of the diamonds and diamond setting.

The price of the rings is based less on the price of gold on any particular day and more on craftsmanship involved. Retail, there's about a triple markup on that commodity--or there used to be.

Most of the time, I think my wedding ring is weightless and, in fact, lifts me up and keeps me going. I emphasize "most of the time" ... So, what is it's real value? Priceless ! 8)

Note: My signature line applies sometimes, but not "most of the time" :P

There are so many variables involved in figuring the value of a ring with stones.
Another consideration is the quality of the stone and how included it is.
Typically the jewelry trade carries a huge mark up. I have bought stones from overseas direct from the cutters and paid next to nothing compared to retail.
The best thing to do if you are looking for the true value is to take it and have an appraisal done on it.

The problem I've run into with jewelry appraisals is finding an appraiser who is NOT a jewelry retailer, i.e. finding an independent appraiser. The ones I called to get an appraisal on a diamond ring wanted from $200 to $300 to do the job. :o That's kinda tough to justify unless you have some pretty pricey "baubles" ... :o

Didn't seem like it weighed much at all but I lost 200 pounds when I took it off!
