Post USS Pampanito (SS-383) - 1
Seeing the submarine USS Pampanito and the Liberty ship Jeremiah O'Brien docked in SF, it was impossible for me NOT to take the tour. Since I have always loved ships and being very interested in WWII, this was a wonderful opportunity to breath in some 'salt air'. :)

Space in a submarine is very limited, despite what most Hollywood movies try to make you believe, and there are always other people touring the ship too and they do get in the way of course. ;) I did the best I could, taking pictures, given the circumstances.

Touring the Pampanito gave a good impression of what a sailor's life in a submarine was in those days. Just imagine that around 80 people were aboard this vessel!

There she is...

And the captain is welcoming me

sailors have to volunteer for sub duty. not just the close quarters but having to live intertwined with the same people for weeks on end. 80 people, bound to be someone you really dislike but no getting away from them. i lived on a destroyer that was close enough for me

Thanks all, for appreciating my gull shot so much. Very unexpected, I wasn't even sure about including it in the series. Now I'm glad I did. :)

Not sure I would volunteer. I'm not claustrophobic or anything, but I do like some privacy and there is absolutely none aboard a sub.
